Marilyn Manson 1990-xx-xx

unknown, FL

The Beaver Meat Cleaver Beat is the second demo tape by the Spooky Kids. Multiple variants of this demo exist, and at least three different cover designs are in possession of collectors. The covers include lyrics for six tracks: White Knuckles, Red (In My) Head, My Monkey, Strange Same Dogma, and I.V.-T.V. They are likely refined versions of tracks from the first demo, The Raw Bones Psalms, along with a new track, White Knuckles. I don't have a copy of these tapes yet and cannot confirm this information.

There are also related demo tapes, which were circulated without cover art and feature an extended track list that adds Junk the Magic Dragon and The Telephone (a.k.a. Jesus Is My Boyfriend) with an instrumental outro. They are advertised as The Beaver Meat Cleaver Beat on multiple websites, e.g., http://spookykids.net/disco/bmcb.html and https://manson.wiki/The_Beaver_Meat_Cleaver_Beat, but due to the lack of circulating demo tapes with covers, it is not entirely clear whether they actually are variants of The Beaver Meat Cleaver Beat. In comparison with The Raw Bones Psalms, the relative timing of the shared tracks is similar, but there are noticeable differences, such as alternate vocals in the chorus of Strange Same Dogma. They are also faster and differently balanced, but it's unclear whether these are just analog duplication artifacts.

Description

This tape originates from Brian Tutunick (a.k.a. Olivia Newton Bundy), who sold it to a Spooky Kids collector in or shortly after 2000. Manson and Daisy gave it to Tutunick in 1990 to see if he wanted to join the band. This is likely the tape from which the 2nd generation copy DEMO lossless (CS(2) > FLAC, The Beaver Meat Cleaver Beat) was dubbed from.

This transfer is taken directly from the original tape without any alterations (no cutting, noise reduction, or EQ). The audio quality is superior to DEMO lossless (CS(2) > FLAC, The Beaver Meat Cleaver Beat), particularly on the interview on side 2. Spectrum analysis reveals a defined noise floor and some harmonic distortion, but with clear sound signatures and perfect stereo separation. Faint clicking sounds are present, mostly in the left channel, audible during quiet sections. These clicks are inherent to the tape and not introduced during the transfer process.

It includes the complete interview, apparently recorded from a radio broadcast. 22 minutes in length, beginning with KMFDM music and ending with a station announcement followed by Meat Beat Manifesto music. The conversation starts with:

SD: "Marilyn Manson & The Spooky Kids. How are you doing, Marilyn?"
MM: "Hey man, I’m spooky as always. Brand new. How about you?"
SD: "Hey, doin’ pretty good. How did Marilyn Manson & The Spooky Kids originate?"
(full transcript at https://manson.wiki/Interview:1990_Scott_David_interviews_Marilyn_Manson)

They also announce a gig at downtown Ft. Lauderdale "this Wednesday May 30", indicating that the tape was created prior to 1990-05-30.
