Marilyn Manson 1990-xx-xx

unknown, FL

The Beaver Meat Cleaver Beat is the second demo tape by the Spooky Kids. Multiple variants of this demo exist, and at least three different cover designs are in possession of collectors. The covers include lyrics for six tracks: White Knuckles, Red (In My) Head, My Monkey, Strange Same Dogma, and I.V.-T.V. They are likely refined versions of tracks from the first demo, The Raw Bones Psalms, along with a new track, White Knuckles. I don't have a copy of these tapes yet and cannot confirm this information.

There are also related demo tapes, which were circulated without cover art and feature an extended track list that adds Junk the Magic Dragon and The Telephone (a.k.a. Jesus Is My Boyfriend) with an instrumental outro. They are advertised as The Beaver Meat Cleaver Beat on multiple websites, e.g., http://spookykids.net/disco/bmcb.html and https://manson.wiki/The_Beaver_Meat_Cleaver_Beat, but due to the lack of circulating demo tapes with covers, it is not entirely clear whether they actually are variants of The Beaver Meat Cleaver Beat. In comparison with The Raw Bones Psalms, the relative timing of the shared tracks is similar, but there are noticeable differences, such as alternate vocals in the chorus of Strange Same Dogma. They are also faster and differently balanced, but it's unclear whether these are just analog duplication artifacts.

Description

This is an interesting tape that I received as "unreleased version of Big Black Bus". It is actually highly similar to DEMO lossless (CS(1) > FLAC, Brian Tutunick recruitment tape, The Beaver Meat Cleaver Beat), so I consider it mislabeled and a variant of The Beaver Meat Cleaver Beat while the story behind the tape is unknown. Since the first three demos are snapshots of continuous reiterations of a common set of tracks, it's not entirely unthinkable that it was labeled BBB by the band.

Side A contains exactly the same tracks as DEMO lossless (CS(1) > FLAC, Brian Tutunick recruitment tape, The Beaver Meat Cleaver Beat), with only playback speed and drift differences caused by analog dubbing, and slightly longer pauses between songs. Spectrum analysis shows notable interference in direct comparison. Although the noise floor in the musical frequency range is lower, there are strongly visible frequency artifacts within and beyond the music into the higher frequencies. There is considerable bleeding between the stereo channels, and sounds appear smeared. Clicks with identical timing are also noticeable, indicating they were already part of the tape's source. Despite the interference, it sounds a bit clearer, leaving it uncertain whether the artifacts stem from an inferior source tape, the transfer process, or possible post-production effects (e.g., a "remaster").

The most fascinating aspect of this tape is side B, which also features the Scott David interview, but not the same version. The order of questions, topics, and inserted songs are similar, yet this appears to be an alternate take. It’s clearly not an edit, as there are too many differences in wording. Also, his voice effect is harsher. It doesn't seem to be recorded from a radio broadcast either, because it lacks typical broadcast elements like the station ID, announcements, or music. This interview feels like a second take, because Manson answers seem more refined and to the point. But why would they record a second take after it aired? Why would a radio station even re-record an interview with a young band? Maybe it was a scripted rehearsal take, with the aired version later improvised, but that's just speculation. This interview is 19 minutes long and starts with this conversation:

SD: "Scott David here, speaking with Marilyn Manson, front person of Marilyn Manson & The Spooky Kids. How are you doing, Marilyn?"
MM: "Yeah, doing pretty good man, but, your hair is on fire."
SD: "Ha whoa, hope the building doesn't burn down. How did Marilyn Manson & The Spooky Kids originate?"

It ends with a shoutout by Marilyn Manson together with Daisy Berkowitz.
